The Detroit Diesel S50 and S60 fuel pump check valve is a small component located within the fuel pump assembly. Its main function is to prevent fuel from flowing back into the fuel tank when the engine is not running.

 

When the engine is running, the fuel pump draws fuel from the tank and delivers it to the engine for combustion. The check valve is positioned between the fuel pump and the fuel tank outlet. It consists of a spring-loaded valve mechanism that allows fuel to flow only in one direction, from the tank to the engine.

 

The check valve operates by opening when the fuel pump creates suction, allowing fuel to be drawn into the pump. Once the engine is shut off, the check valve closes to prevent fuel from flowing back into the tank. This is important because if fuel were to flow back, it could cause air to enter the fuel system, leading to starting difficulties and poor engine performance.
